Also known as pipe support or pipe hanger designed to transfer the load from the pipe to the supporting structures. (support: a permanent device for retaining a pipeline in a particular manner or position)
Recommendations on methods of fixing
It is necessary to ensure that the supporting structure is suitable for carrying the loading.
Fixing to steelwork
- Supports should be attached, where possible, by means of clips or clamps designed to withstand the effects of vibration and other live loads.
- Where the design of the steel work permits, and where agreed, supports may be attached to steel work members by drilling and bolting or by welding.
Fixing to brickwork, concrete or stone work. Suitable methods of fixing are;
- Masonry bolts
- Rag bolts
- Sleeved bolts (passing through the wall) with wall plates where required
- Steelwork members built into brickwork or masonry.
(Hanger: a device for suspending a pipeline from a fixed point, and for maintaining the pipeline at a predetermined level while allowing limited axial and lateral movement)
Pipe hanger components;
- A pipe clip or one piece strap complete with load and clip bolts, and
- A sling rod having a sling eye at the lower end and a spherical washer and nuts at the top end.
Cantilevered member, with or without a Kneebrace (a diagonal structural member used to transfer load or provide stability), designed to withstand a gravity load and/ or horizontal forces.
