Catchpits are chambers on surface water drains and sewers installed to retain silt and constructed as manholes but without benching. They are also often used on subsoil drains, especially at the point of connection with a surface water drain or sewer. The chamber floor is usually 450 mm below the invert of the outlet to form a sump and the invert of the inlet is usually 25 mm above the invert of the outlet to form a cascade for improved hydraulic efficiency.
